The vision Habitat's founder, Millard Fuller, included a ministry whose lifeblood would be its volunteers. Indian River Habitat for Humanity could never have become as successful as it is without our dedicated volunteers.

There are several ways to volunteer at Indian River Habitat for Humanity:

Construction Opportunities

One-Day Build Volunteer

Volunteer for a day by yourself, with a friend, or with a group. Workdays are typically 7:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. The type of work depends on the status of the house. Experience in construction is useful, but not required.

Become a Weekday Volunteer

This requires a time commitment of at least one weekday per week for at least 3 months. As a weekday volunteer, you will see the fruit of you labor, meet new friends and learn new skills.

Or Become a Crew Leader

The Crew Leader’s principle function is to teach and coach the volunteers to produce acceptable results in a safe manner. A Crew Leader can usually guide 4 - 5 unskilled or semi-skilled volunteers. There are often 10 - 15 volunteers on a job site. Training will be provided.

Join Our Women Build Crew

National Women Build is an annual Spring event sponsored by Habitat. There is no experience necessary, our jobsite supervisors and experienced Women Build crews will provide guidance and instruction. Learn more...

Food Angels

Everyone’s favorite volunteer!

Prepare and/or deliver snacks and beverages to our hard working volunteers. If you enjoy baking or simply want to pick up something, this is an easy and much needed part of our program.

Office Volunteers

Do you have a friendly, outgoing personality? If you do and you enjoy answering the phone and/or doing clerical work we would love to have you on our team. Our pool of office volunteers work on an “as needed” basis covering the front desk during vacation and other absences. You may also be contacted to help with special office projects.

Neighborhood Revitalization Program

The Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NR) focuses on minor home repair and beautification of homes owned by qualifying individuals. Owners are often elderly and/or disabled.

Join a team of volunteers as they come together to beautify neighborhoods one home at a time. Projects range from painting and landscaping to minor repairs. You will enjoy the opportunity of working side by side with residents as we improve their community. Learn more about this program.

Financial Counselor

Family Services has implemented a new component to our Homeownership Training Program that will provide 3 to 4 sessions of individual financial counseling for prospective homeowners after they have completed the Homebuyer Education Classes and before they close on their home.

If you have any experience in banking or financial planning, we need your help for approximately one hour per session working individually with a prospective homeowner.

Volunteer Committees

Faith Relations Committee

This committee works to involve congregations in Habitat’s housing ministry where they can experience the power of putting their faith into action.

Family Selection Committee

This committee is responsible for evaluating potential partner families. Based on information verified by staff, members recommend qualified families to the Board of Directors for final approval.

Family Support Committee

Mentor a new Habitat homebuyer by helping them through their partnership period followed by one year of homeownership.

Scholarship Committee

This committee is responsible for oversight of a program that assists Habitat homeowners and their children who are committed to advancing their education beyond a high school diploma and/or GED certificate, as well as providing financial assistance toward education-based after school and summer care programs. Help to generate the revenue that builds 1 in 3 Habitat Homes!

Volunteer opportunities include:

Donation Processor

If you like to unpack boxes and find treasures, we have the perfect volunteer position for you! You will unpack, clean, test, ticket, and merchandize these wonderful treasures on the sales floor.

Merchandise Display

If you like decorating, organizing, and creating merchandise displays, then you have found your niche! Use your creativity to make all our great stuff look even better and easier for our customers to find!

Dispatcher

Like to talk on the phone? This one's for you. You'll take donation calls and schedule our trucks to pick up the good stuff!

Cashier

Previous experience would be helpful, but we can train you! We need several friendly people to take four (4) hour shifts in cashiering. Pick a time and let us know what suits you best.

Warehouse and Driver Assistant

Do we have a workout for you! If you are fit and can handle heavy lifting, we need help loading and unloading merchandise that is sold or being donated.

Repair and Assembly Assistant

If you like to tinker and do minor repairs on furniture, tools, appliances, etc., then you can join a fun group of workshop volunteers!

Sales Assistant

If you are a people person with a friendly smile, you can serve by assisting others in finding what they need.

There are age restrictions to work in the ReStore

Donation Researcher and eBay Listing Assistant

We have the best stuff: collectibles, antiques, and one-of-a-kind items! Help us to research the value of these unique items to price and sell online.

Office /Clerical

If you like data entry, following a paper trail, and putting some time into tracking donations, then this is your area to shine!

Volunteer Coordinator

If you are energetic, friendly, and like to work mornings, consider helping as a volunteer coordinator. You would assist the ReStore manager with recruiting, scheduling, and orienting ReStore volunteers. You will help ensure new volunteers receive all of the information they need, know their schedules and feel welcome into their new Indian River Habitat for Humanity family.

Join our DeConstruction Team

DeConstruction is the removal of building materials for the purpose of re-use. Join our DeConstruction Team in the removal of kitchens, bathrooms and accessories donated by homeowners in our area. After removal, we sell these materials to the public through the ReStore, generating funds for Habitat.

How to Become a Volunteer

STEP 1: Attend Volunteer Orientation

Volunteers MUST attend Volunteer Orientation prior to volunteering. Orientation takes place at our office, The Burnham Center, located at 4568 North U.S. Highway 1,Vero Beach. Orientations dates are listed below.

STEP 2: Volunteer Placement

Your volunteer experience is most important to us so will place you depending on your interests. Once we know your interests and availability, we will schedule you to start work.

STEP 3: Join the Habitat Family!

You are ready to be a part of our Habitat family as we work together to build homes, community and hope in Indian River County!

Our construction site is open Tuesday-Thursday & Saturdays from 7:30am-12noon. The ReStore is open from 10am-6pm Monday-Saturday with volunteer opportunities starting as early as 8:30am and our Neighborhood Revitalization projects vary.
