Youth Programs/Scholarships

Indian River Habitat for Humanity provides educational support for its Habitat homeowner children in various ways. Elementary and middle school students can participate in after school and summer programs; and the Habitat Prep Club, for Habitat middle and high school students, offers college and trade school tours, social activities and community service projects as well as information on college preparation, financial aid assistance and scholarship availability, including Indian River Habitat scholarships.

 

SCHOLARSHIP REPORT:

Eight students are receiving $1,000 scholarships for the Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 semester. The program has also provided after-school subsidy funds for 26 students, and more than 30 plan to take part in quality summer care programs, all as a result of funds raised through events such as the HabiTrot 5K and the Habitat Bowling Tournament.

Habitat Youth - On the Go!

Al and Carol DeRenzo are dedicated Habitat volunteers with a great love for young people. They have worked hard to establish our Youth Scholarship Program and to mentor members of the Prep Club as they work toward higher education. Al and Carol recently held a special Italian Cooking class to share their love of cooking in the Italian style, using fresh herbs from their own garden. Prep Club member Terrell Charles, who will enter the 9th grade this fall at Charter High School, was an eager future chef. Together they prepared a spaghetti and meatball dinner, including fresh baked bread. From Al, Terrell learned that meals cooked "from scratch" are nutritious and much cheaper than fast food. The class began with a tour of the DeRenzos' herb garden. As Al explained each herb, he handed out samples so Terrell could appreciate the various distinct aromas. From the cloves of garlic that began the meal to the fresh strawberries and biscotti to end it, everyone agreed it was a delicious repast. Terrell was excited to learn so much and was able to take home the ingredients to prepare a similar meal for his own family.

Terrell, who is the son of Tara Gibson, is eager to advance in his education. Although only an eighth grader, he took three courses at Indian River State College this summer. Great job, Terrell. Shine On!!
