Northern Trust partnership invaluable to success of Habitat's mission

A land bank and development program for a nonprofit organization such as Habitat is a huge undertaking. We could not have managed this amount of risk without the partnership and assistance of a strong financial institution.

Understanding our need to acquire land while the prices were favorable, Northern Trust gave Indian River Habitat a helping hand when we needed it most by purchasing $1 million worth of our mortgages, thus substantially reducing our indebtedness. Additionally, understanding the challenge we faced, their management refinanced our line of credit, thereby affording us the opportunity to purchase these parcels of land while prices were favorable.

Earl Morgan, Senior Vice-President and senior banking officer, said, “No other banking service that we provide through Northern Trust is more gratifying to us or is more beneficial to this community than the ministry in which we are privileged to partner with Habitat for Humanity. We deal with scores of tax-exempt entities, but none exceeds Habitat as to integrity and consequence.”

Beyond favorably impacting our cash flow, Northern Trust’s generosity saved Habitat more than $70,000 in interest payments over the next year. Robert Bauchman, president of Northern Trust in Indian River County, added, “Northern Trust is pleased to support Habitat for Humanity’s ongoing efforts. Investment in the Habitat “Land Bank” will continue to provide affordable housing opportunities for our community and its residents.”

In signing these agreements, affiliate President Andy Bowler commented, “Whenever we have faced a major challenge in our development, Northern Trust has been a faithful partner. The Board of Directors of Habitat and its staff are deeply grateful to Northern Trust for being such good corporate citizens.”

Indian River Habitat's first Blitz Build

gets the job done!

Three local professional home builders joined with Indian River Habitat for Humanity to construct two homes as part of Habitat for Humanity International’s Builders Blitz 2008. The local event kicked off with a Wall Raising Celebration at 7 am May 10 and concluded with a Dedication Service at 3 pm Wednesday, May 14.

Wissell Construction and Barth Construction went steel-tipped toe to steel-tipped-toe with Croom Construction in building homes for the Luna family and the Simmons family in Indian River Habitat’s current Fellsmere development, Grace Meadows. Both homes were up, inspected and turn-key ready in 5 days!

The Home Builders Blitz 2008 is the largest Habitat project of its kind, and took place in communities across the nation. All homes were completed, from start to finish, in one week.

Croom Construction has been building in Indian River County since 1978. Among Croom’s projects: the renovation of McKee Botanical Garden; Marine Bank and Trust; and five John’s Island condominiums.

Since 1979, Barth Construction has made its imprint with such projects as the Citrus Financial Center, several Grand Harbor riverfront residences and the Vero Beach Book Center.

Among the homes Wissell Construction has built in Indian River County are residences in John’s Island, Orchid and Windsor.

Whirlpool’s pledge: people and appliances

Every year, Whirlpool donates hundreds of appliances to Habitat homes nationwide, including a refrigerator and range in every single Habitat home built in North America since 1999.

By its 100th anniversary in 2011, the company has pledged to support “every Habitat home, everywhere, with everyone.” This means that by the end of 2011, Whirlpool will either provide appliance donation support, house sponsorship or financial support for every Habitat home built around the world.

“The strength of our partnership with Habitat for Humanity is driven by the hearts and personal involvement of our employees,” said Ted Dosch, corporate vice-president and the executive sponsor of Whirlpool’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

On top of all that nationwide generosity, several members of the Whirlpool Florida contract sales team volunteered with Indian River Habitat for Humanity for a workday in June in Grace Woods, Habitat’s current construction site off of Oslo Road. Joining the 7- 12-member Whirlpool team were members of National Women In Construction, (NAWIC) many of both groups traveling from across the state to support Indian River County’s effort.
