Volunteers Are Our Lifeblood

The vision our Habitat's founder, Millard Fuller, included a ministry whose lifeblood would be its volunteers. And Indian River Habitat for Humanity could never have become and continue to be as successful as it is without this priceless asset. There are several ways you can be a Habitat volunteer. Working on the construction site, of course, is the Habitat job most folks think about, wielding a hammer, actually building or renovating a home.

But you can also choose to serve on one of our event or program committees; provide snacks for workers on the job sites; help in our office; work in our wonderful Home Center; or be a Family Support Partner.

Contact Volunteer Coordinator Jessica Schmitt, 772.562.9860 X212, for details. We look forward to hearing from you.

A NEW Volunteer Opportunity (it's for the birds!)

BIRDHOUSE DECORATOR: An exciting new volunteer opportunity allows all you creative individuals to put those skills to use to help raise funds for IRHFH's Scholarship Program that provides after-school care subsidy money and college scholarships to Habitat homeowner’s children!  Decorated Birdhouses are sold at different community events and all proceeds are received by the Scholarship Program.  From the understated to the elaborate, Habitat birdhouses are selling like hot cakes and we need interested volunteers to help us decorate them!  This volunteer role can be done at your leisure, whenever the time and place suits you to work on it!  All you have to do is arrange with Lindsey Goodall, X211 or Debbie Parcher, X232 to pick up a birdhouse to decorate and return it to us upon its completion!

Be A Family Support Partner

The Family Support Committee at IRHFH is in need of Family Support Partners for new families who are beginning the Sweat Equity process.

A Family Support Partner is a volunteer who basically nurtures a partner family through the process of becoming a Habitat homeowner.  Once paired with a family, a Family Support Partner makes a commitment to that family from the time of selection until at least 6 months after the family moves into their new home.  During that time, a Family Support Partner’s responsibilities to their family range from staying in touch regularly (anything from a  weekly phone call to in-person visits) to encouraging the family throughout the process and assisting the family with the groundbreaking ceremony and/or home dedication.

The influence that Family Support Partners are to their partner families is an intricate part of the process and is what makes this volunteer position so important.  If you are interested in becoming a Family Support Partner for one of the new partner families, you must have a willingness to commit to weekly contacts with the family as well as monthly meetings of the Family Support Committee.  Training is held monthly.  To sign up, please call Lindsey at 562-9860 ext. 211.
