Rosalie and Jimmy Walker

Indian River Habitat for Humanity has selected the home of Rosalie and Jimmy Walker for its bi-monthly  "Pride of Ownership" recognition."

The couple has lived in their Habitat home for "Seven years and two hurricanes," as Rosalie puts it.

It is her husband, she continues, who maintains their yard in such charming fashion.  "He works two jobs and still manages to do not only our yard work but also maintains a neighbor's yard and mows another neighbor's grass," Rosalie explains with pride.

Debbie Parcher, Habitat's Resource Coordinator, says, "The maintenance of their lawn shows the pride they take in owning their Habitat home." Debbie expresses thanks to all the homeowners who take care of their yards and notes that such effort not only visually enhances the neighborhood, but also helps maintain property values.

Do You Know Someone. . .

Who might be a good Habitat homeowner candidate? We are seeking applicants in Indian River County who are serious about becoming homeowners. They must be willing to work hard, complete several classes, be able to pay a mortgage and insurance and follow the other guidelines on the road to Habitat homeownership.

How the Program Works

The "American Dream" of homeownership becomes a reality for families in need through the work of Indian River Habitat for Humanity. We pride ourselves on being a hand up for our families and not a handout. In addition to monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor, also known as “sweat equity” - into building their home and the homes of others.

Indian River Habitat for Humanity relies on donations from corporations, foundations, churches, and individuals to build homes. In return, the homes that are built with this donated money are sold to each new homeowner at cost and financed with a 20-30 year interest-free mortgage. The principal portions of the mortgage payments are added to our “Fund for Humanity” and are used to build more new homes.

Who Are Habitat Home Applicants?

Indian River Habitat for Humanity builds affordable homes for low-income families who currently live in substandard housing. Habitat for Humanity believes homeownership is a vital step in creating self-esteem in both families and neighborhoodfs, and is the most basic way to break the cycle of poverty from generation to generation. While we have transformed the lives of more than 220 families Indian River County, our community's need for affordable housing is far too large for any one organization to solve.

Homeowner Requirements

A potential Habitat homeowner must: be presently living in housing that is substandard in some way or inadequate due to any of the following - housing not adequately maintained by the landlord; cost of housing; overcrowded housing; temporary housing, etc. Living in subsidized housing does not preclude a family from consideration.

Service Area

We serve Indian River County. Currently, construction is being completed on new homes in Oslo Park (behind Thompson Elementary School); and in Fellsmere. Additionally, we are purchasing and renovating pre-owned homes throughout the county.
