Despite the economic down turn, there is still a lot of remodeling and demolition going on around the county. As a result, our landfill continues to grow from construction debris disposal. In fact, according to Himanshu Mehta, Managing Director of the Indian River County Solid Waste Disposal District, construction and demolition debris has contributed about 17% or 17,524 tons to the landfill so far this fiscal year starting in October 1, 2009, and that’s during a slow economy.
But did you know there is a way you can potentially make money, reduce the solid waste stream, and support your local Habitat affiliate? This triple win scenario starts like this:
•    You decide to remodel or totally demolish the house.
•    You call me at 562-9860, X213.
•    We visit and develop a plan for removing salable items from the property.
•    We come back and do the work for free.
•    You get a receipt good for a potential tax break. (Please consult your tax professional for advice on deductions).

•    The items we take stay out of the landfill.
•    We sell them in the Home Center to raise money to help build houses for people right here in our county.
        How easy is that?
Now if you’re into this kind of thing, and you don’t have a remodeling job or house to tear down, don’t fret. You can still get in the game. How? By becoming a deconstruction volunteer.
There are so many aspects to the deconstruction process. We need more than just people to remove things. We need people to take the material out, transport it, and some times de-nail or otherwise clean up the product to make it more appealing for re-use.
We provide supervision, snacks, tools, equipment and the opportunity for unlimited satisfaction, knowing you are doing something completely beneficial to your community! Plus…you get to see all the really cool stuff first!
So come on! Get in the game. Be part of the triple win!
